Lebanese President Highlights Need for Exclusive State Authority Over Arms

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun reaffirmed on Friday that the Lebanese Armed Forces hold sole responsibility for protecting the country’s southern region. His remarks came during a visit to the Benoit Barakat Barracks in Tyre, headquarters of the army’s Southern Litani Sector, on the eve of Lebanon’s Independence Day and ahead of his televised national address.

Aoun praised the army’s steadfast role in safeguarding southern Lebanon and upholding national sovereignty, dignity, and independence. He commended its efforts in enforcing the ceasefire agreement with Israel and paid tribute to the 12 soldiers who have lost their lives since the launch of the security plan aimed at maintaining state authority over all weapons.

Despite criticism from some domestic and foreign parties, Aoun emphasized that the army remains undeterred in its mission. His visit followed the cancellation of official meetings in Washington between US officials and Lebanese Army Commander Gen. Rudolph Haikal after US lawmakers voiced concerns about the army’s performance. During his tour, Aoun reviewed security updates showing Israeli violations along the Blue Line, documented by the UN Interim Force in Lebanon.
