UN Watchdog Calls on Israel to Investigate Gaza Torture Allegations

GENEVA: A UN committee cautioned that the situation has “gravely intensified” since the beginning of the Gaza conflict and urged Israel on Friday to establish an independent investigative panel to look into allegations of Palestinian torture. Deeply concerned about reports indicating a de facto state policy of organized and widespread torture and ill-treatment” in Israel, according to the UN Committee against Torture.

The committee emphasized that it unequivocally condemned the attack perpetrated by Hamas and other groups on October 7, 2023 against Israel.” Its ten independent experts oversee how nations carry with an international agreement against torture.

To review and investigate all allegations of torture and ill-treatment committed during the current armed conflict,” the experts urged Israel to “establish an independent, impartial, and effective ad hoc investigatory commission.”

The committee members recommended that Israel “ensure the immediate entry of necessary humanitarian aid and aid workers into Gaza and prosecute those responsible, including superior officers.” From arrest to questioning to incarceration, it is said that torture has evolved into a purposeful and pervasive instrument of state policy.
