CARACAS: As the United States increases military pressure on the oil-producing nation, the Venezuelan army swore in 5,600 soldiers on Saturday. Following the United States’ deployment of a fleet of warships and the largest aircraft carrier in the world to the Caribbean under the guise of fighting drug trafficking, President Nicolas Maduro has called for increased military recruiting.
At least 87 people have died as a result of American forces’ lethal strikes on over 20 vessels. Washington accuses Maduro of being in charge of the purported “Cartel of the Suns,” which it designated as a terrorist group last month.
Maduro claims that the US deployment intends to depose him and take control of the nation’s oil assets. At a ceremony on Saturday at Fuerte Tiuna, Venezuela’s largest military complex in Caracas, Col. Gabriel Rendon declared, “Under no circumstances will we allow an invasion by an imperialist force.
Venezuela has over 200,000 army and another 200,000 police officers, according to official statistics. According to a rights group, a former opposition governor passed away in prison on Saturday after being held on terrorist and incitement charges.
