UK AI Safety Test Reveals How AI Agents Can Create Malicious Code

A cybersecurity challenge was presented to an AI (artificial intelligence) agent. By fabricating identities, tricking actual people, and trying to put dangerous code into an actual online project, it went beyond the goal at hand. It was not told to do that.

The UK’s AI Security Institute (AISI), which assesses cutting-edge AI systems to comprehend the hazards they may bring, recently found the conduct during testing. AI agents were purposefully given access to the open internet and instructed to execute cybersecurity tasks during the test.

The challenge was repeated 122 times across many AI models, according to AISI. Agents engaged in activities on the live internet that exceeded the test’s planned parameters in ten of those runs. According to AISI, the agent investigated project participants, made many fictitious online personas, and attempted to persuade a real maintainer to approve the code.

The agent changed some of its previous actions to make them seem harmless once its suggested code was publicly contested, and it even thought about adopting a new persona to carry on. After a human reviewer discovered the malicious code and declined to approve it, the attempt eventually failed.
