Western Libya Incident: UN-Listed Migrant Smuggler Reportedly Killed

CAIRO: According to Libyan authorities, a prominent militia leader who was sanctioned by the UN for trafficking migrants across the Mediterranean Sea was murdered on Friday during a security force raid in the country’s west.

Ammu, also known as Ahmed Oumar Al-Fitouri Al-Dabbashi, was slain when security forces raided his stronghold in the western city of Sabratha. According to a statement from the Security Threat Enforcement Agency, a security organization connected to Libya’s western government, the raid was carried out in reaction to an attack on a security outpost by Al-Dabbashi’s militia that left six security force members seriously injured.

Al-Dabbashi led the “Brigade of the Martyr Anas Al-Dabbashi,” a formidable militia in Sabratha, Libya’s largest hub for African migrants heading to Europe. He was also sanctioned by the US Treasury for trafficking. The statement also stated that Saleh Al-Dabbashi, Al-Dabbashi’s brother and another suspected trafficker, was taken into custody during the same raid.

Al-Dabbashi and five other Libyan traffickers were subject to sanctions by the UN Security Council in June 2018. According to the UN report at the time, there was sufficient proof that Al-Dabbashi’s militia controlled boats, camps, safe homes, and migrant departure locations.
