UNITED NATIONS: If Israel does not remove obstacles, such as a “vague, arbitrary, and highly politicized” registration process, humanitarian operations in the Palestinian territories, especially Gaza, might collapse, the UN and relief organizations said on Wednesday.
In a joint statement, the UN and more than 200 local and international assistance organizations warned that dozens of international aid organizations would be de-registered by December 31 and would have to cease operations within 60 days. Access to essential services will be severely affected by the deregistration of INGOs (international non-governmental organizations) in Gaza, according to the statement.
Most field hospitals, primary health care facilities, emergency shelter responses, water and sanitation services, nutrition stabilization centers for children with acute malnutrition, and critical mine action activities are run or supported by INGOs,” the statement stated.
According to the statement, “the ongoing re-registration process and other arbitrary hindrances to humanitarian operations have left millions of dollars’ worth of essential supplies including food, medical items, hygiene materials, and shelter assistance stuck outside of Gaza and unable to reach people in need,” even though some foreign aid organizations have registered under the system that was implemented in March.
