BRASILIA: A bill to reduce former President Jair Bolsonaro’s 27-year prison term was approved by the Brazilian Senate on Wednesday, but President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and the Supreme Court are expected to oppose it.
The lower house passed the bill last week, and it is now in Lula’s hands. He hasn’t stated whether he will veto it or sign it into law. The former president’s sentence might be reduced to little over two years in prison. Additionally, the document reduces sentences for anyone found guilty of participating in the January 2023 riot in which Bolsonaro supporters stormed and looted Congress, the Supreme Court, and the presidential palace.
After the law was approved in a 48-25 vote, Senator Esperidiao Amin, the bill’s sponsor in the Senate, declared, This is part of our path to peace, and we must all celebrate it. Bolsonaro started serving his term last month for organizing a coup against Lula following his defeat in the 2022 election.
The bill’s sponsor in the lower house decided not to provide full amnesty to individuals participated in “political demonstrations” following Lula’s election, despite a preliminary version proposed by opposition right-wing politicians.
