AMMAN: On Thursday, members of Jordan’s parliament emphasized the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees’ crucial role and called for greater international assistance to sustain the services it provides.
The agency’s director of affairs in Jordan, Olaf Becker, and the director general of the Jordanian Department of Palestinian Affairs, Rafiq Khirfan, met with representatives from the parliament’s foreign affairs and Palestine committees to examine the agency’s efforts to aid Palestinian refugees.
According to the Jordan News Agency, the committee chairs, Haitham Ziadin and Suleiman Saud, commended Jordan for its efforts under King Abdullah to protect Palestinian rights, stop Israeli military operations in Gaza, and promote a fair and comprehensive settlement to the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians. They denounced what they termed as disinformation attempts and Israeli legislation that have targeted UNRWA and advocated for increased international financing for the organization.
The MPs stressed the need to safeguard vital services amid growing humanitarian crises. They applauded the UN General Assembly’s Fourth Committee’s recent vote to extend the agency’s mandate until June 2029. They emphasized Jordan’s commitment to supporting the organization and cautioned that political attacks on it would jeopardize regional stability.
