LONDON: Following a decision by authorities to strengthen enforcement of hate speech legislation following a tragic assault in Australia, police in London detained two individuals who shouted for “intifada” during a pro-Palestinian demonstration.
Hours after police in Manchester and London, England, declared a crackdown on demonstrators using phrases like “globalize the intifada,” the arrests took place. Jewish leaders claim the slogan escalates tensions and encourages attacks on Jews, such as the one that murdered 15 people on Sunday at Bondi Beach in Sydney, while pro-Palestinian protestors claim it captures the global demonstrations against the war in Gaza.
Following Bondi Beach and an attack on a Manchester synagogue on October 2 that resulted in two fatalities, Greater Manchester Police Chief Constable Stephen Watson and London Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mark Rowley said they made the decision to adopt a more aggressive approach.
In a joint statement issued on Wednesday, they stated, “We know communities are concerned about placards and chants like ‘globalize the intifada,’ and those using it at future protests or in a targeted way should expect the Met and GMP to take action. Words have meaning and consequences, the context has changed, and violent acts have occurred.
