UNITED NATIONS/PARIS: Antonio Guterres, the head of the United Nations, called for the prosecution of those responsible for the horrific incident that occurred during Friday prayers at a mosque in the Syrian city of Homs.
The Secretary-General reaffirms that it is abhorrent to harm civilians or places of worship. According to a statement from spokesman Stephane Dujarric, “He emphasizes that those responsible must be identified and brought to justice. An Islamist terrorist organization claims responsibility for the explosion that killed at least eight worshippers at a mosque in a predominately Alawite neighborhood of Homs.
The attack was denounced by France as well, who described it as a “terrorist act” intended to destabilize the nation. According to a statement from the French foreign ministry, the attack “is part of a deliberate strategy aimed at destabilizing Syria and the transition government.”
It denounced what it described as an attempt to “compromise ongoing efforts to bring peace and stability. The extremist organization Saraya Ansar Al-Sunna claimed in a Telegram post that its membersdetonated a number of explosive devices” in the Imam Ali Bin Abi Talib Mosque in the city of central Syria.
Following a suicide bombing in a Damascus church that claimed 25 lives in June, the incident, which occurred during Friday prayers, was the second explosion in a house of worship since Islamist rulers came to power a year ago.
