After Saudi Arabia supported a request for UAE forces to withdraw from Yemen within 24 hours, the United Arab Emirates said on Tuesday that it was withdrawing its remaining personnel from the country, escalating tensions between the two Gulf giants and oil producers.
Coalition forces commanded by Saudi Arabia had targeted the port of Mukalla in southern Yemen hours earlier. The airstrike on what Riyadh claimed was a weapons shipment connected to the UAE was the worst escalation in the two Gulf kingdoms’ growing split to far.The World Health Organization reports that drones attacked a hospital and a kindergarten in Kalogi, South Kordofan, this month, killing 114 people, including 63 children.
The U.S. State Department reported that Secretary of State Marco Rubio discussed tensions in Yemen and other matters impacting Middle East stability with the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates in Washington. A number of Gulf nations, including as Bahrain and Kuwait, declared that they would back any initiatives to promote communication and find a political solution.
According to Qatar, the safety of Saudi Arabia and other Gulf nations constitutes an inseparable part of its own security. The Gulf heavyweights, once the two main pillars of regional stability, have seen their interests diverge on issues ranging from geopolitical dominance to oil quotas.
