Libya Plane Crash: UK to Study Black Box for Cause of Accident

TRIPOLI: Libya announced on Thursday that Britain had consented to examine the black box from the December 23 plane crash in Turkiye that claimed the lives of a Libyan military delegation, including the commander of the army.

Following a visit to Ankara, General Mohammed Al-Haddad and four of his aides perished. According to Turkish officials, their Falcon 50 aircraft crashed soon after takeoff due to an electrical malfunction. Additionally, three crew members, two of them French, were slain. In fields near the accident site, the aircraft’s black box flight recorder was discovered.

Transport Minister Mohamed Al-Chahoubi of the Government of National Unity (GNU) stated during a press conference in Tripoli that “we coordinated directly with Britain for the analysis” of the black box.

Despite severe differences between the west and the east, General Haddad enjoyed great popularity in Libya. Since longstanding leader Muammar Qaddafi was overthrown and killed in 2011 by an uprising supported by NATO, the North African nation has been divided. The internationally renowned GNU, which rules the west, had Haddad as its chief of staff. Khalifa Haftar, the military leader, controls the east.
