Why the Euphrates Dam Is Important as Syria Regains Control

DAMASCUS: According to the Syrian Arab News Agency, Syrian government forces regained control of the Euphrates Dam, one of the nation’s most vital infrastructures, on Sunday, ending years of management by the Syrian Democratic Forces.

A major change in control of a key location in the northeastern Syrian Arab Republic has occurred, with the transfer of management of the dam’s water and hydroelectric facilities to government technicians and specialists, according to officials. The Euphrates Dam is essential to Syria’s energy and water supply.

Eight 110-megawatt generating units make up its hydroelectric power station, which is situated on the right bank of the dam and provides electricity to a sizable portion of the area. Additionally, the dam contains Lake Al-Tabqa, also called Euphrates Lake, which has an area of about 640 square kilometers and is about 80 kilometers long and up to 8 kilometers wide.

The reservoir is a vital source of drinking water, irrigation, and electricity generation because it can hold up to 14.1 billion cubic meters of water at full capacity. The return of the dam to government control, according to officials at Syria’s Ministry of Energy, guarantees a key location and restores vital services to millions of people, highlighting its significance for managing the nation’s water resources and electrical network.
