Spain Train Accident: Two High-Speed Trains Derail, 21 Killed

MADRID: On Sunday, a high-speed train in southern Spain derailed and collided with another train that was approaching. The impact forced the second train off the rails, and police sources told Reuters that at least 21 people were killed.

The disaster occurred in the province of Cordoba, close to Adamuz. Police have verified the deaths of 21 individuals thus far, while state station Television Espanola reported that 100 people had been hurt, 25 of them critically. According to the TV station, one of the people who perished was the driver of a train that was going from Madrid to Huelva.

According to Adif, the accident occurred at 6:40 p.m. (1740 GMT), just ten minutes after the Iryo train from Cordoba on its way to Madrid.

Ferrovie dello Stato, an Italian state-owned railway company, owns the majority of Iryo, a commercial rail operator. According to a Ferrovie dello Stato official, the train in question was a Freccia 1000 that was en route from Malaga to Madrid.

In a statement, the firm expressed its sincere regret for the incident and stated it has initiated all emergency procedures in order to collaborate closely with the appropriate authorities to handle the situation. Renfe, the company that ran the second train, did not reply to a request for comment. All rail services between Madrid and Andalusia have been halted by Adif.
