Lula Accuses Trump of Undermining the United Nations System

BRASILIA: On Friday, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, the president of Brazil, accused Donald Trump of attempting to establish “a new UN” with his planned “Board of Peace.” The seasoned leftist is among the international leaders who have declined to join Trump’s new global conflict resolution organization, which has Trump as its chairman and a $1 billion permanent seat.

“What’s happening instead of fixing” the United Nations? According to Lula, “President Trump is proposing to create a new UN where only he is the owner. Leaders and officials from 19 nations joined Trump on stage to sign the founding charter of his “Board of Peace” on Thursday at the World Economic Forum in the Swiss ski town of Davos. In international affairs, Lula advocated multilateralism against what he referred to as “the law of the jungle.”

His comments are made one day after he had a phone conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping, who asked his counterpart to protect the United Nations’ “central role” in global affairs. Lula stated that “the UN charter is being torn” in his speech on Friday.

The board’s charter seems to seek to compete with the UN and does not seem to restrict its duty to the Palestinian area, despite the fact that its original purpose was to supervise the reconstruction of Gaza. France and Britain, two important US allies, have also voiced misgivings.
