Rising Tensions in the Middle East as Gaza Ceasefire Faces New Threats

New York City: A senior UN official warned the Security Council on Wednesday that the precarious ceasefire in Gaza could collapse due to widespread humanitarian shortages, ongoing Israeli military operations, and growing limitations on aid delivery. Ramiz Alakhbarov, the UN’s deputy special coordinator for the Middle East peace process, noted that at the same time, settlement growth and violence in the occupied West Bank are rising.

He noted that aid deliveries via Egypt, Jordan, Israel, the occupied West Bank, and Cyprus have helped to raise supply quantities and improve nutrition, acknowledging some progress on the ground in Gaza, but emphasizing that “more must be done.

He noted that although significant hostilities have stopped, the majority of Gaza’s population still depends on humanitarian help, and displaced families remain vulnerable to worsening winter conditions. help organizations are still unable to function on a large scale.

Alakhbarov stated that “nearly the entire population in Gaza remains in need of humanitarian assistance,” cautioning that the misery of around 1.5 million displaced Palestinians who are residing in subpar shelters has been exacerbated by intense rain and frigid weather.

He cautioned that emergency shelter sites are unable to meet even the most basic international requirements due to restrictions on the transportation of construction supplies and technical competence. He also recounted families battling nightly to keep their tents from collapsing due to the wind and rain.
