OpenAI, the company that made ChatGPT, revealed on Friday that they thought about telling Canadian authorities about the actions of a person who later perpetrated one of the worst school massacres in the country’s history.
OpenAI reported last June that it found Jesse Van Rootselaar’s account through efforts to find abuse for “furtherance of violent activities.” The tech company in San Francisco claimed it thought about telling the Royal Canadian Mounted Police about the account, but at the time, it decided that the account activity didn’t reach a level that would require law enforcement to get involved. OpenAI blocked the account in June 2025 because it broke the rules for how to use it.
Last week, an 18-year-old slaughtered eight people in a rural area of British Columbia and then shot himself in the head. OpenAI indicated that the only time they will call the police on a user is if there is a clear and immediate threat of serious bodily harm to others. The business stated it didn’t find any credible or impending planning. The Wall Street Journal was the first to write about OpenAI’s news.
