Why the UAE Closed Its Embassy in Tehran and Withdrew Staff from Iran

DUBAI: In response to Iranian missile strikes against the Gulf nation, the United Arab Emirates withdrew its ambassador and all diplomatic personnel from Iran and closed its embassy in Tehran on Sunday.

The decision was made in reaction to what the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs called “blatant Iranian missile attacks” on Emirati land, according to a statement.According to the ministry, the strikes were a grave and careless escalation that targeted civilian targets such as homes, ports, airports, and service institutions. According to the statement, “these hostile attacks are a blatant violation of national sovereignty and a clear breach of international law and the United Nations Charter.”

The action demonstrates the UAE’s “firm and unwavering stance against any aggression” that jeopardizes its security and sovereignty, the ministry continued. It said that Iran’s persistently aggressive and provocative actions jeopardize regional and international peace, energy security, and global economic stability by undermining de-escalation efforts and driving the region in a perilous direction. Since Saturday, hundreds of drone and missile attacks have targeted Dubai and Abu Dhabi as Tehran retaliates against US-Israeli airstrikes.
