BEIRUT: On Sunday, thousands of Hezbollah supporters flocked to the southern suburbs of Beirut to pay their respects to Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. They sobbed over the deceased leader and chanted, “Death to America, death to Israel.”
Clad in black and brandishing Iranian and Hezbollah flags, they chanted together, “God is one, and Khamenei is the leader. When Israel and the United States launched waves of strikes against Iran on Saturday, the Islamic republic quickly retaliated, killing Khamenei.
Donald Trump, the president of the United States, has repeatedly called for Iranians to topple their government and has pledged to strike Iran “for as long as necessary. Naim Qassem, the leader of Iran-backed Hezbollah, said in a statement on Sunday that the killing of Khamenei and other Iranian officials was “the height of crime.”
Qassem declared that his movement will not abandon “the field of honor and resistance” and that “we will undertake our duty of confronting the aggression. In the southern suburbs of Beirut, where Hezbollah is dominant, mourners raised images of the Iranian leader who was killed.
