SEOUL: North Korean leader Kim Jong Un supervised additional tests of strategic cruise missiles and anti-warship missiles launched from a naval destroyer, official television claimed on Tuesday. The weapons tests took place on Sunday, according to the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), and are the latest in a series of missile launches by the nuclear-armed nation.
According to KCNA, two strategic cruise missiles flew for around 7,900 seconds apiece, or more than two hours, while the anti-warship missiles flew for nearly 2,000 seconds (33 minutes). The missiles went “along the flight orbits set in the sky above the West Sea of Korea and struck the targets with ultra-precision hit accuracy,” according to the KCNA, which refers to the Yellow Sea by its preferred name.
The tests were conducted from the Choe Hyon, one of the North’s two 5,000-ton destroyers, which were both launched last year as Kim attempts to strengthen the country’s naval capabilities. A photo issued by the KCNA depicts a missile in its initial flight stage after being launched from the warship, with an orange flame trailing from its tail.
Another photograph shows Kim observing the test fire from a distance, backed by naval personnel. According to the KCNA, Kim was also briefed on Tuesday about the weapon systems of two more destroyers under construction and “made an important conclusion.
