France’s 2050 Fossil Fuel Exit Roadmap: What It Means for Europe’s Energy Future

France’s 2050 Fossil Fuel Exit Roadmap: What It Means for Europe’s Energy Future

PARIS: At a time when countries are reevaluating their dependence on fossil fuels, France has issued a comprehensive “roadmap” to wean the nation off of planet-heating coal, gas, and oil by 2050.

The plan, unveiled at a global climate summit, unifies current energy and climate policies and targets under a single heading with a clear objective, rather than making any new commitments.
No other nation has released a plan this detailed and unambiguous, according to analysts.

These are the specifics of the 14-page plan that the second-largest economy in Europe unveiled on Tuesday during the first-ever fossil fuel transition meetings in Santa Marta, Colombia. In 2023, less than 60% of France’s ultimate energy consumption came from fossil fuels, down from 65% in 2011. Energy used by end users, such as homes, businesses, and farms, is referred to as final consumption; it does not include energy used in the production and distribution of electricity.

By 2030 and 2035, the French roadmap aims to cut the proportion of fossil fuels in ultimate energy consumption to 40% and 30%, respectively.
By 2050, carbon neutrality is the goal.
