How Technology Convergence Across Operating Systems Is Transforming Global Competition, According to WEF

According to the most recent World Economic Forum research, the capacity to combine and scale various technologies across entire operating systems will provide the next wave of competitive advantage, rather than individual breakthrough innovations.

As artificial intelligence, robots, smart materials, spatial computing, and next-generation energy systems mature at the same time, the enterprises and governments who are moving quickly to integrate these technologies into intelligent systems are already ahead.

The report, created in collaboration with Capgemini, is based on cross-industry research and real-world case studies in 12 sectors, identifying recurring patterns such as the blending of mature and experimental technologies and the blurring of industry boundaries that determine whether convergence scales or stalls.

As advanced technologies progress, the primary constraints to competitive advantage are no longer time or resources, but rather how successfully businesses integrate digital tools with physical activities. This is already taking place across industries and regions. Converging technologies are changing the way systems work around the world, from operating rooms to manufacturing floors, power grids to research labs. Technology convergence has progressed from a technical conversation to a strategic leadership mandate with immediate operational implications.
