OpenAI Trial Heats Up as Elon Musk Is Grilled Over AI Profit Motives

Elon Musk struggled to explain how his own for-profit AI company differs from the one he is attempting to overthrow as he sparred with attorneys for a third day on Thursday in his California trial against OpenAI.

“Few answers are going to be complete, especially when you cut me off all the time,” the obviously agitated multibillionaire remarked as he continued his clash with the OpenAI defense lawyer on Thursday morning.

In order to force the richest man in the world to answer questions, U.S. Federal Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers had to step in multiple times. Rogers will rule whether OpenAI, the company that created ChatGPT, compromised its initial charitable objective.

The software tycoon said, “I am not a lawyer,” after the court accused him of acting like a lawyer and complained that opposing counsel’s queries were “leading.” The courtroom erupted in amusement as he continued, “Well, technically, I did take Law 101 in school.

Musk, who gave $38 million to OpenAI’s co-founders between 2015 and 2017, accuses CEO Sam Altman and his partner Greg Brockman of betraying the startup’s charitable mission by turning it into a commercial enterprise valued at over $850 billion that is about to go public.
