WASHINGTON: In defiance of President Donald Trump, the US House passed a war powers resolution on Wednesday that would stop US military action against Iran. A few Republicans and Democrats joined forces to put an end to the three-month conflict that has upended domestic and international politics.
Two weeks ago, when the war powers resolution was about to be approved, House Speaker Mike Johnson unexpectedly stopped floor action in an attempt to prevent an outcome that would demonstrate the growing resistance to the war. However, as the issue continues and Trump finds it unable to negotiate a speedy resolution, dissatisfaction has only increased.
The House chamber erupted in excitement as the roll call on Wednesday was 215-208. Earlier this week, New York House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries declared, “This reckless and costly war of choice needs to end today.”
We can put an end to this reckless and expensive war of choice, which has cost the American taxpayer over $100 billion, that’s extraordinary, and left our country in a weaker position relative to Iran. All we need is a handful of Republicans to join us.
