Cybersecurity in the UAE: The Foundation of a Secure Digital Economy

The impact of drone strikes that damaged Amazon Web Services (AWS) facilities in the Middle East amid the escalation of the US-Israel-Iran war in March of this year extended well beyond the attack site. Delivery networks were impacted by GPS interference, logistical systems stalled, financial platforms’ connectivity deteriorated, and several organizations briefly went back to manual operational procedures after years of automation.

The event served as a crucial reminder of how reliant on constant internet communication modern economies have grown. In the United Arab Emirates, cybersecurity is increasingly seen as a component of the country’s economic infrastructure rather than just an IT function due to the deep integration of banking systems, ports, airlines, payment platforms, and government services into cloud-based settings.

Additionally, the attacks on AWS infrastructure strengthened a more general change that was already occurring throughout the world. Cloud infrastructure is no longer viewed solely as a business tool. Planning for economic and geopolitical resilience is increasingly incorporating it.
