European Leaders Back New Push for Ukraine-Russia Ceasefire Talks

The presidents of the United Kingdom, Germany, and France indicated on Sunday that they welcomed a proposal for negotiations between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin to try to arrange a cease-fire, and that Europe would play a role.

In a joint statement, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and French President Emmanuel Macron “commended” Zelensky’s appeal for an end to the war and the suggestion for direct negotiation between Ukraine and Russia, with active US and European participation.

The leaders of Ukraine’s informal security alliance, known as the E3, met with Zelensky in Downing Street on Sunday, following his open letter to Putin. Zelensky’s letter expressed Russian dissatisfaction with Ukrainian missile and drone assaults, high inflation, and fuel shortages, indicating a desire for peace.

He emphasized that while the US is currently focused on the fight in Iran, it would be unwise to wait until the war in Europe becomes a priority. Putin said the offer did not come across as sincere, and he saw no value in meeting right now, adding that an agreement “for the long term” was needed.
