DUBAI: After several service personnel were killed in action over the weekend, President Donald Trump declared on Monday that Iran would “pay” for the deaths of US soldiers. The president stated that US military leaders have been informed of his instruction but did not provide any additional information. The United States launched another wave of airstrikes on Iran on Monday.
In retaliation, Iran attacked Bahrain, the home of the US Navy’s 5th Fleet, Kuwait, and Jordan, three allies of the United States. Glimmers of optimism emerged on the diplomatic front when Iran’s interior minister traveled to Pakistan, a crucial conflict mediator, for negotiations, despite the US and Iran inching closer to full-scale war.
Shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial supply route for global oil supplies, has essentially stopped, and the temporary agreement negotiated last month that was supposed to put an end to the war has collapsed. Both sides have attacked civilian infrastructure that millions of people depend on as battle heats up.
Oil prices have increased in recent weeks due to the escalation. In anticipation of this fall’s midterm elections, average US gasoline prices rose to an average of $4 per gallon, and benchmark Brent crude traded above $86 per barrel on Monday.
