India Employs Police and Restricts Transportation in Anticipation of a Significant Demonstration

In anticipation of mass demonstrations on Saturday, India deployed thousands of police in its capital and restricted transportation in and around Delhi. The demonstrations demand the resignation of the country’s election chief due to alleged irregularities in the voter roll.

The protests, which were initiated by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), a youth-led organization, are the result of weeks of opposition mobilisation in response to allegations of misconduct during a nationwide voter-roll revision.

After a newspaper investigation last month alleging misconduct by the Election Commission of India (ECI), demonstrations occurred throughout the nation. According to opposition parties and detractors, the exercise has the potential to disenfranchise voters in favour of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Roads leading to Jantar Mantar, the customary government-designated protest site, are blocked by numerous layers of yellow metal barricades, and tens of thousands of police officers and paramilitary personnel have been deployed throughout the capital. This weekend, rallies at the site have been prohibited by the police.

The protests, which were initiated by the CJP, are widely perceived as a reenactment of its mass mobilisation in July, which resulted in the resignation of the education minister due to an examination scandal.CJP chief Abhijeet Dipke stated on X that the dictator would prefer to close down the entire national capital and inconvenience millions of citizens than permit a peaceful protest at a designated protest site.
