Russia Claims to Have Detained a Japanese Journalist on Suspicion of Spying

MOSCOW: The foreign ministry announced on Tuesday that Russia has detained a Japanese journalist on suspicion of espionage. Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova named the reporter as Yuki Imai of the Hokkaido Shimbun newspaper, saying that although he was accredited to the ministry, he was charged with “conducting espionage activities on Russian territory.”

An unnamed Japanese individual who had worked for Japanese intelligence to gather intelligence about Russia’s defences was detained on the Far East island of Sakhalin, according to the FSB security service. In recent years, Russia has detained a number of nationals from what it refers to as “unfriendly” nations on suspicion of being employed by Western intelligence services.

According to TASS and RIA Novosti news agencies, which cited the FSB, it has “opened a criminal case against the Japanese national” and placed him in pre-trial arrest. Russian media said he would be detained until December 12. ” Tokyo’s attempts to use its correspondents in Russia to gather information aimed at undermining our state’s security are regrettable,” Zakharova said, adding that this was “not an isolated case.”
