Gaza’s stance indicates a shift in the organization’s mindset; in the previous few months, the group had claimed that the US was impeding efforts to reach a truce.
Regarding US President Joe Biden’s three-phase ceasefire proposal for a permanent truce in Gaza, Hamas stated on Friday that it approved of its provisions.
In a statement, the group said, “Hamas confirms its readiness to deal positively and constructively with any proposal that is based on the permanent ceasefire and the full withdrawal (of Israeli forces) from the Gaza Strip, the reconstruction (of Gaza), and the return of the displaced to their places, along with the fulfillment of a genuine prisoner swap deal if the occupation clearly announces commitment to such deal.”
Hamas’ stance indicates a shift in the organization’s thinking; in previous months, the group had charged that the US was supporting Israel and impeding efforts to reach a truce.
According to a Palestinian person close to the mediation efforts, “Hamas sees Biden’s position now more focused on pressuring Israel to return to negotiations with a different attitude, or they (Israel) could risk clashing with the Americans.” This information was provided to Reuters.
Biden and Netanyahu’s disagreements about red lines in Gaza have created the possibility of a confrontation between the two presidents and raised concerns about whether the US might impose restrictions on military supplies should Israel carry out its offensive in the now-devastated territory.
