Houthis from Yemen are Thought to have Fired Missiles at a Container Ship While an Oil Tanker Burned

Authorities reported that late on Friday in the Gulf of Aden, two missiles believed to have been fired by Yemen’s Houthis struck a container ship flying the flag of Liberia and landed close by without inflicting any damage.

The Houthis launched the attack after repeatedly attacking an oil tanker flying the Greek flag in the neighboring Red Sea, where they planted explosives that they later exploded. The worst attack in recent weeks put a significant oil spill at risk as the militia’s campaign interrupts the $1 trillion worth of products that flow through the Red Sea annually due to the Israel-Hamas conflict in the Gaza Strip and stops some assistance shipments to Sudan and Yemen, two countries that are severely affected by conflict.

Two missiles “exploded in close proximity to the vessel” during the strike on Friday, according to the British military’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center. The attack occurred around 240 kilometers (150 miles) east of Aden.

According to the UKMTO, the ship “reports all crew are safe and proceeding to next port of call.” “We’re still looking into it.”

The container ship Groton, flying the flag of Liberia, was identified as the target on Saturday by the Joint Maritime Information Center, an international organization under the command of the US Navy. In a similar Houthi attack off the coast of Aden on August 3, the Groton was targeted by two missiles, one of which caused minor damage.
