A New UN Project will Try to Address the Military Misuse of AI

NEW YORK: The United Nations is starting a new project on the military applications of artificial intelligence, aiming to address some grave worries about the harm that quickly expanding technology may represent to humanity.

The UN Institute for Disarmament Research’s project is set to debut on Thursday, creating the first international conference for important parties to address the issue. At a UN press conference on Tuesday, Robin Geiss, head of the Geneva-based institute known as UNIDIR, cautioned that “the margin for human judgement is increasingly narrow, including in the nuclear domain. It’s difficult to determine how near the world is to machines acting independently of human control, according to Geiss, and that uncertainty “is the issue we’re trying to resolve here.

One issue is that AI is gradually infiltrating so many fields – early warning systems, information collecting, and reconnaissance, to name a few  “and it’s quite difficult to say at which point we’re actually really losing control,” he said. For a long time, he said, there was general reluctance to deal with AI guardrails, but the growth of its capabilities and potential impact has led to “a growing realization that we stand at a crossroads that now is the time to act, including on military AI.
