RIYADH: The special envoy of the OIC Secretary-General on Islamophobia was received by Saudi Arabia’s representative to the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation on Monday, according to a report by the Saudi Press Agency.
Mehmet Pacaci, who was appointed to the position recently, was welcomed in the Makkah region by Saleh bin Hamad Al-Suhaibani. Pacaci took over the role following a decision made by the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers during a recent meeting in Cameroon.
The duties of the envoy and upcoming initiatives to carry out OIC decisions about countering Islamophobia were discussed. According to SPA, there is growing anti-Islamic sentiment that puts the values of tolerance and international harmony in jeopardy.
According to the report, this is on top of the pervasive hostility and hatred that extremist groups foster towards Muslims and other minorities in general. It further stated that Saudi Arabia’s efforts to assist the OIC and other pertinent organisations in the fight against Islamophobia were reviewed at the meeting.
