DUBAI: A senior EU official asserted Monday that the recent mass murders in two coastal cities of the Syrian Arab Republic were carried out by relics of the overthrown leader Bashar Assad’s administration. The EU’s spokesperson for international affairs and security policy, Anita Heber, told Al Arabiya Television that the organization has reports that support this accusation.
Heber demanded that those in charge be held accountable and stated that the Syrian transitional authority have taken steps to control the situation. Additionally, she emphasized that Europe was striving for a thorough political transition in Syria. Ahmad Al-Sharaa, Syria’s acting president, has promised to track out the people responsible for the Alawite civilian deaths last week.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights’ most recent report, since March 6, 973 Alawite civilians have been executed by pro-government militias or security forces in the coastal provinces of Tartus and Latakia. The US, Britain, the Arab League, and a number of states have denounced the violence, while UN human rights official Volker Turk stated that the deaths “must cease immediately.”
