According to the Leader of the Top Research Program, the UK Health Service is More Like a "National Sickness Service"

RIYADH: The leader of a top research program stated at a conference in Riyadh on Tuesday that the UK’s National Health Service has been more of a “national sickness service,” concentrating more on curing illness than promoting general health and preventing sickness. During a panel discussion at the second Global Healthspan Summit, which Arab News is a media partner for, Raghib Ali, CEO of Our Future Health UK, the nation’s largest health research project, made the statements.

According to Ali, “the NHS has frequently operated more as a national sickness service.” “We must shift to a model that places more emphasis on maintaining health than merely curing illnesses.” Ali talked about how he started his work as a junior physician in an emergency room twenty-five years ago. He identified a serious problem with the healthcare system: far too many people were arriving with severe illnesses that had taken decades to develop.

He stated, “As physicians, we were doing a good job; of course, we could treat our patients.” However, we were seeing individuals with illnesses that had progressed over decades far too frequently. “We could have prevented or significantly delayed those conditions if we could have identified those individuals much earlier and taken appropriate action.” The fact that diseases like cancer, heart attacks, and strokes are frequently addressed only after they have gotten worse emphasises how urgently earlier intervention is needed.
