Al-Rumaila Mosque Refurbishment Emphasises Riyadh’s Najdi History

Al-Rumaila Mosque Refurbishment Emphasises Riyadh's Najdi History

RIYADH: The historic Al-Rumaila Mosque in Riyadh’s Al-Dhahirah area is one of the oldest religious monuments being repaired as part of a national project, according to the Saudi Press Agency. The second phase of the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Project for Historic Mosques focuses on rehabilitating and restoring religious and cultural value while preserving the historic architectural style through sustainable, ecologically friendly practices.

The proposal will reconstruct the mosque in the Najdi style, increasing its size from 1,185 to 1,556 square meters and doubling its capacity from 327 to 657 worshippers. Although the mosque’s exact construction date is uncertain, the design will be true to its original shape, according to the SPA, displaying the architectural style of old Riyadh mosques.

The project will use clay construction techniques and natural materials, especially in the Najdi style, which is ideally suited to the local terrain and scorching desert climate.

The Al-Rumaila Mosque is one of 30 mosques in 13 regions in the project’s second phase. These include six in Riyadh, five in Makkah, four in Madinah, three in Asir, and two in the Eastern Province, Jouf, and Jazan. The Northern Borders, Tabuk, Baha, Najran, Hail, and Qassim all have one mosque in the design. Phase one was finished in 2018, with 30 mosques repaired across ten areas. Saudi corporations and historical restoration professionals are spearheading the development activities.
