DAMASCUS: Following a series of attacks that both sides blamed on one another, which resulted in at least two civilian deaths and numerous injuries, Syrian government forces and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces decided to defuse the situation on Monday night in the northern city of Aleppo.
Citing the defense ministry, Syria’s official news agency SANA reported that the army’s general leadership had given the order to cease attacking the SDF’s fire sources. After de-escalation discussions, the SDF issued orders to stop reacting to strikes by Syrian government forces, according to a later statement.
According to the Syrian health ministry, the SDF’s shelling of the city’s civilian areas resulted in two fatalities and other injuries. Two toddlers and two civil defense workers were among the injured. Hours after Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stated during a visit to Damascus that the SDF seemed to have no intention of upholding a pledge to integrate into the state’s armed forces by a predetermined year-end date, the violence broke out.
The US-backed SDF, which rules large portions of northeastern Syria, is seen by Turkiye as a terrorist group, and the country has threatened to use force if the group violates the deal.
