In an unexpected trip to London on Monday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer to finalise a military co-production agreement in an effort to strengthen assistance almost three years after Russia’s invasion.
Zelensky had visited King Charles III at Windsor Castle before meeting with Starmer at his house on Downing Street. Zelensky is scheduled to attend a NATO conference in The Hague, which coincides with the trip.
Speaking to Ukrainian soldiers receiving training in the UK, Starmer claimed the two countries had “an excellent bilateral meeting” and reached a deal on “industrial military co-production,” which he described as “a massive step forward in the contribution that we can continue to make. While no specifics were disclosed, Zelensky, speaking next to Starmer, emphasised that the agreement “will be firm and will transform both nations.
Starmer said it was “really humbling” to witness the Ukrainian forces’ “level of professionalism, commitment, and bravery. More than 50,000 troops have been trained as part of the multinational collaboration.
Zelensky claimed that the strategy helped “strengthen our army” and allowed Ukraine to “survive and fight.” Since Russia invaded Ukraine in early 2022, the United Kingdom has been one of its staunchest backers, imposing rounds of sanctions on Moscow and providing various packages of military aid.
