A day after a fire in Sri Lanka claimed the lives of twelve inmates and injured six others, the manager of a care home in the country was taken into custody on Thursday, according to officials.The manager of the Maupiya Sewana Elders Home was arrested as forensic experts combed through the wreckage and discovered seven more charred bodies, raising the death toll to 12.An AFP photographer saw the manager in handcuffs being escorted to the scene on Thursday, as police interviewed survivors and neighbours.
In addition to elderly residents, the facility also housed young people with mental issues.”Fifty-one residents and staff members who were rescued on Wednesday have been moved to a nearby government facility,” said Fredrick Wootler, a spokesman for the police department. The investigation into what caused the fire is still ongoing by the authorities.
