Dalai Lama at 90: Health Update and Upcoming Knee Treatment in New Delhi

The 90-year-old Dalai Lama is dealing with a number of health problems, and his office announced on Thursday that he will receive medical care for his left knee in New Delhi this month. From his home-in-exile in the Himalayan town of Dharamshala, the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhists is scheduled to visit the Indian capital on Friday. His supporters usually hold lengthy prayers before any scheduled medical procedures because they have been worried about his health in recent years.

The Nobel Peace Prize winner underwent surgery on the same knee in New York in 2024, but he told Reuters months later that it was “nothing serious” despite using aides to walk carefully. He now travels farther within his compound in a golf cart.

In addition to reassuring his supporters that he will be reborn after his death, the 14th Dalai Lama stated last year that he planned to live past 130 years, fulfilling his previous prophecy. Since leaving Tibet in 1959 after an unsuccessful rebellion against Chinese control, the longest-serving leader of Tibetan Buddhism has resided in Dharamshala. Citing a centuries-old custom, China, which wants to strengthen its hold on Tibet, views the Dalai Lama as a separatist and demands that it approve his successor. The Dalai Lama has advised his adherents to reject Beijing’s picks.
