PORT SUDAN, Sudan: First responders said on Sunday that a drone strike on a bustling market in Sudan’s North Darfur province killed ten people over the weekend, but they could not identify the perpetrator. Aid workers were evacuated on Sunday from Kadugli, a beleaguered, famine-stricken city in the south, as fighting escalated elsewhere in the nation.
Tens of thousands of people have died, almost 12 million have been displaced, and the world’s largest displacement and famine crises has resulted from the fight between Sudan’s army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces since April 2023. The council claimed that the attack set “fire in shops and caused extensive material damage,” but it did not identify the perpetrators. Neither the RSF nor the Sudanese army immediately responded.
South Kordofan is now the main focus of the conflict, and fighting has intensified in the state capital, Kadugli, where eight civilians were murdered in a drone attack last week while trying to escape the army-controlled city. Due to the security situation, humanitarian organizations have “evacuated all their workers” from the city, a source from a Kadugli-based organization told AFP on Sunday.
