Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has voiced appreciation for Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s support regarding the Sumud aid flotilla, an international convoy aiming to break Israel’s naval blockade and deliver humanitarian assistance to Gaza. In a statement released by Erdogan’s office on Saturday, the Turkish leader emphasized that Turkiye is closely monitoring developments surrounding the flotilla. Erdogan assured Sanchez that Turkiye remains committed to ongoing efforts to end Israeli attacks in Gaza and to ensure the steady flow of aid to the embattled enclave.
The Global Sumud Flotilla has assembled nearly 50 vessels, including ships carrying over 100 journalists and medical professionals. At present, Turkish military drones and a frigate are reportedly monitoring the flotilla’s progress in the eastern Mediterranean. Meanwhile, Spain and Italy have dispatched naval vessels to the region to provide support and protection for the convoy and its activists.
Erdogan also reiterated Turkiye’s long-standing stance against Israeli aggression and said his country will continue advocating for an unimpeded humanitarian corridor to Gaza. The president praised Prime Minister Sanchez’s proactive position, highlighting the significance of global solidarity in responding to the crisis in Gaza.
