How 150 Artisans Create the Kaaba’s Kiswa Using Gold and Silver Threads

In a potent yearly custom that symbolizes Saudi Arabia’s ongoing care for Islam’s holiest place, the Holy Kaaba was covered in its new Kiswa at the beginning of the new Hijri year 1448 AH. The Kiswah covering of the Kaaba in Makkah was made entirely by Saudi artisans at the King Abdulaziz Complex, demonstrating the Kingdom’s artistry. More than just a ceremonial custom, the yearly replacement of the Kiswa is a highly coordinated national endeavor incorporating expert craftsmanship, cutting-edge methods, and a strong Islamic legacy.

About 150 Saudi artisans worked for almost 11 months to finish this year’s Kiswa. 47 exquisitely embroidered Quranic verses are hand-assembled pieces of opulent black silk that make up the final masterpiece.Thirty passages from the Quran are meticulously engraved on several panels using silver threads that have been coated with 24-karat gold. The final Kiswa weighs about 1,410 kg, which is indicative of its size and artistry.

Water desalination, silk washing, weaving, printing, embroidery, assembly, and final inspection were the seven steps that the covering went through before it was finished. Before being installed at the Kaaba, it was carried to the Grand Mosque on a specially made trailer to maintain its condition.
