FRANKFURT: A court said on Thursday that a German vacationer who filed a lawsuit alleging that other travelers had reserved all of the sun loungers at his hotel with towels had received over 1,000 euros in compensation.
In August 2024, he and his family traveled to the Greek island of Kos on a package vacation that cost more than 7,000 euros, arranged by the German tour operator TUI. However, a local court in the northern city of Hanover that heard his case stated that “every day during the holiday all the loungers at the hotel’s pool area were reserved with towels from six o’clock in the morning.”
It stated that the unnamed man and his family “found it impossible to obtain a lounger by the pool for relaxing and sunbathing” since they did not adopt the same strategy. Reserving the loungers in this manner violated resort regulations, he reported to a tour company official and hotel employees, but he said no meaningful action was taken.
The tour operator contested whether the loungers were reserved daily in breach of the resort’s regulations, which had six pools and around 400 rooms, according to the court filings. The court ruled in favor of the vacationer last month, giving him compensation of 986 euros and 70 cents ($1,160), or around 15% of the cost of his trip.
