How Attacks on Airport Radar Systems Threaten Global Aviation Safety

KUWAIT CITY: Kuwait says Iranian airstrikes on its territory on Thursday morning destroyed airport radar and injured people. This was the second Iranian attack on Kuwait’s only international airport in just over a week, following a drone strike that killed an Indian national and injured 63 others on June 3.

The airport’s radar was targeted this morning,” Kuwait’s civil aviation organization reported in a letter to the International Civil Aviation Organization. It further stated that the assault “injured people and caused significant material damage and losses affecting radar facilities, equipment and air traffic management systems.”

Earlier, Kuwait claimed it had reopened its airspace to commercial aviation following the latest round of Iranian attacks, which triggered a brief shutdown. Kuwait’s military had previously stated that its air defenses were engaging “hostile aerial targets,” following the United States’ renewed attacks on Iran.

A foreign ministry statement expressed “Kuwait’s condemnation and denunciation of the continued sinful and repeated Iranian attacks. Iran has routinely targeted Gulf airports and other civilian infrastructure throughout the conflict.Last week, Iran accused Kuwait and Bahrain of helping the US to launch assaults on an Iranian tanker and island from their territories.
