Dr. Tayseer Ibrahim’s experience as a displaced medical student highlights the deep and lasting impact of Sudan’s ongoing war on millions of lives. Forced to flee Khartoum multiple times due to escalating violence, Ibrahim’s perilous journey eventually led her to safety in Kassala after a week-long trek, mostly on foot. The war, which erupted in April 2023, has caused unprecedented displacement, with nearly 12 million people forced to leave their homes, including 8.8 million internally displaced and over 3.5 million refugees who fled abroad by early 2025.
Drawing from her personal ordeal, Ibrahim joined fellow displaced female doctors to establish the Youth Voluntary Mental Health Organization in Kassala. Supported by the UN refugee agency UNHCR, the center aims to address the urgent psychological needs of young Sudanese affected by trauma and the collapse of the healthcare system amid the crisis.
The conflict has devastated Sudan’s infrastructure and healthcare, leaving survivors like Ibrahim to rebuild communities and deliver critical support to a generation scarred by war and displacement. Following the RSF’s conquest of the North Darfuri capital on October 26 following an 18-month siege, the UN reports that almost 90,000 people have fled El-Fasher in the last two weeks, exacerbating the situation.
