Impact of Higher Residency Costs on Expats Living in Japan

The House of Representatives in Japan has approved a bill that could increase the cost of obtaining permanent residency (PR) and renewing a visa by multiple times this year, making immigration to the country more expensive.

According to The Japan Times and Nikkei Asia, the lower House has amended the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act, which is the first significant change to immigration fee ceilings in decades. According to the same reports, the proposal is anticipated to pass the upper House during the current Diet session.

It grants the government the legal right to raise the cost of PR applications, resident status modifications, and renewals. According to the Immigration Services Agency, fees will be determined later by a cabinet legislation.

Japan now charges flat, rather low immigration fees. The suggested framework adds a tiered structure that raises fees based on the duration of stay, especially for visa renewals. In the face of a constant increase in the number of foreign residents, the Japanese government has defended the action as a means of better funding immigration administration and support services.
