Israel's Failure to Leave Lebanon Completely Raises Worries in the Region

BEIRUT: Amid allegations that the Lebanese Army has not met its responsibilities, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared on Thursday that Israeli troops would not leave the southern Lebanon border region within the time frame specified in the ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah. In order to keep the situation from getting worse, Lebanon’s president, Joseph Aoun, met with the US and France to encourage Israel to completely fulfil the deal and evacuate within the allotted time.

Najib Mikati, the acting prime minister, also urged the United States to “step in to ensure the implementation of Resolution 1701 and Israel’s withdrawal.” “The gradual withdrawal from Lebanon will continue in full coordination with the US administration,” Netanyahu’s office stated on Friday.

The Israeli Cabinet, however, declared that “the Israeli Army will remain in its current positions” and declared that “the Israeli Army is prepared for any scenario and will respond harshly and immediately to any violations by Hezbollah.” “Israel is requesting an additional one-month delay in the withdrawal of its army from Lebanon and an extension of the ceasefire agreement,” according to Israeli media sources.

“The political leadership has instructed the army to remain in the eastern sector of Lebanon,” according to the Israeli Broadcasting Corporation, which also stated that “the additional period before the complete withdrawal from southern Lebanon may range from days to weeks.” The event coincided with ongoing Israeli operations along the border, especially in the eastern sector.
