The Japan Prize For Marine Environment Research is Awarded to a Leading Saudi University

JEDDAH: For its efforts to further our knowledge of blue carbon and shifting marine ecosystems, the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology has been granted the coveted Japan Prize. According to a recent Saudi Press Agency report, the university’s accomplishment enhances Saudi Arabia’s reputation internationally for creating marine solutions to fight climate change. One of the beneficiaries of the Japan Prize is Prof. Carlos Duarte of KAUST, an academic who studies marine ecology and biological oceanography. He is well-known throughout the world for his innovative contributions to marine ecology.

Dr. Fahad bin Abdullah Toonsi, secretary-general of KAUST’s board of trustees, expressed delight in the university’s accomplishment and emphasised its contribution to advancing knowledge of marine ecosystems worldwide.

He emphasised Saudi Arabia’s initiatives in marine conservation and sustainable climate change solutions, a significant milestone that reflects KAUST’s dedication to excellence as part of Saudi Vision 2030.

Founded in 1985 and frequently referred to as the “Nobel Prize of Japan,” the honour is given out each year to scientists who make outstanding contributions to science and technology that advance human peace and prosperity.
