In Bahrain's Show, a Saudi Artist Vividly Depicts Themes of Devotion and Spirituality

RIYADH: Themes of remembrance, nostalgia, and the meeting point of the past and present were examined in an exhibition by Saudi artist Emtethal Al-Awami in Bahrain. A rich and visually captivating experience, “101 Hymns” included images, digital artwork, and films depicting prayer scenarios. Qatif resident Al-Awami told Arab News that she got the idea for the exhibition from her late father, whose gestures and acts during prayer and tasbih she had witnessed all of her life.

“The sound of his voice and the movement of his fingers between the prayer rosary beads reflected moments of calm and assurance, embodying feelings of forgiveness and harmony,” she said. “The scene symbolises a strong bond with the self, providing an opportunity for introspection and a return to one’s actual self.” Al-Awami noted that the prayer rosary, a spiritual symbol that has been utilised for more than 3,000 years in a variety of religions and civilisations, was a means of re-establishing serenity amid the commotion and speed of daily life.

“101 Hymns” aimed to demonstrate how tasbih and prayer can provide a haven of peace in a world full of stress and difficulties. As the gentle sound of the prayer beads calms the soul and provides a profound sense of stability, she stated, “I learnt from watching my father that these moments offer important lessons on patience and serenity.”
